While looking at the Stellar Awards with Shawn Pace Rhodes singing, I thought of the idea of highlighting the residents of South Lake County for their many achievements during a formal dinner. At the first meeting in November of 1992 in the dining room of Wootson Memorial Church of God in Christ in Groveland, the name South Lake Black Achievers was born. After the meeting, Mr. Martin Wright said, "It sounds like you will need some money" and he gave the first $50.00 donation toward the banquet. The first South Lake Black Achievers Awards Banquet was held at the Flagship Inn on N. Hwy 27 in Clermont/Groveland on February 13, 1993. The recipients were either raised in South Lake County or had been a resident for 10 or more years.
The South Lake Black Achievers Committee was organized with A. Kaye Irvin-Jones - Chairperson, Willie Montgomery - Co-Chairperson, Sheryl Williams - Secretary, Dorothy C. McGriff - Treasurer. The first members were Cleamstine Caple, Aurelia Cole, Cynthia Fails, Vivian Floyd, Joyce Freeman, Mattie Jones, Victoria Magee, Shelia Neal, Linda Southall, Lela Story, Marie Wootson, and Martin Wright.
The South Lake Black Achievers Committee decided on the Motto, "Keeping Alive Our Heritage."
